A little history Today marks the day of the biggest forum update so far. It was long promised and long overdue. I started this forum in 2004, when I was in my teens. Time went on and now I'm suddenly 28, which means that things such as a job, a house, and a social life eventually took over the attention from this forum. This board has ran on Invision Powerboard 1.2 and 1.3, and after that Simple Machines Forum 1 and 2 over the years. That was just the core, though. The front page has had many different faces and styles. New features And now, we're moved on to XenForo. A modern forum system that is ready for current browsers, and more importantly, mobile devices. This board will run just as beautifully on your phone and tablet (Android, Windows, Apple, Blackberry... it doesn't matter) as on your laptop or your desktop. Everything about it is modern-web, and you notice this in little things such as things loading asynchronous within pages and live notifications. Formatting a post is almost like working in Microsoft Word. It's easy and beautiful. It also has a notification center, which lets you know when someone replied to one of your messages, liked one of your posts, or gave you reputation points. You also get a notification when someone "mentions" you. You do this by putting an @ before typing someone's username, just like on Twitter. All these things help engaging everyone a little more on this board. You can embed virtually everything you like. Just paste the URL of any media site, and it will automatically embed it into your post. Whatever you're working gets automatically saved periodically. So if you close your window by accident, whatever you wrote will be retained. Your avatar is an automatically generated unique image of a robot. You can replace it with anything you like. There are several new BBcodes. Click on the "plus" on top of the editor. Spoiler: Do you dare to click? This is one of them. Oh, and there are a bunch of new smileys, too (with more to come). This system really is a big step up from anything we've ever had on here. It's also the first premium system we've had that wasn't free/open source. The moving process The move wasn't easy. SMF2 was a bit dated, and Xenforo didn't have an importer for this system. So, I had to import everything into a forum system called MyBB, and after that into XenForo. As always, it went wrong several times, PHP and MySQL errors everywhere, causing probably a couple of brand new gray hairs on my head. It also made it clear for me that it was long overdue for an upgrade. This site is the oldest non-official Sega forum on the web, and it looked and ran like shit, causing it to turn into a ghost town. Several links in the style and index pages were broken and it just looked... sad. That wasn't the only problem, though. It turned out there were 87994 users without posts on here. Spam bots who automatically signed up for years for whatever reason, putting a load on the server and making everything slow. I also gave several boards a clean-up and re-organized things here and there, giving the entire place a fresh feeling. It's a lean, mean machine again. All of the messages carried over just fine. The only thing that was lost were avatars and your passwords, but you can easily reset those. I'm still tinkering around after pulling two consecutive all-nighters. I feel it's good enough for being live, but little things will change as we go along. All comments are welcome. Please also report bugs and problems in this thread. In conclusion Thanks for sticking around for so long, everyone! My apologies for taking so long to make this place cool again. Oh, and like & post the Facebook page. Bring your friends!
