U.S. Air Force Building Supercomputer From 2,000 PlayStation 3s.
The 500 TeraFLOPS Heterogeneous Cluster will be used to process images for target recognition.
The massive collection of PS3s will be used to process everything from synthetic-aperture radar images to programs designed to mimic the human mind's ability to recognize pictures.

Pretty amazing that someone out there thought up a way to make use of the PS3. Not to thrilled that some of my tax dollars are being used to buy PS3's though.

The PS3 has a very powerful 8-core processor. Those things linked together are much more powerful and much cheaper than a supercomputer.

500 teraflops is A LOT of power.
